Brief outline of AOS changes for the uninitiated

Post by Calix »

Bare in mind that many of these things have been modified on AOS:R. No Trammel, for instance. Also if you haven't already, read my Why AoS? Post: http://www.uottm.blogspot.co.uk/2011/11 ... _5453.html

New skills:
Necromancy. http://www.uoguide.com/Necromancy With 17 new spells. Uses Spirit Speak as Magery uses Eval Int. Spirit Speak now also works as a heal-type spell when used. Uses Necromancer reagents to cast spells.

Chivalry. http://www.uoguide.com/Chivalry With 10 new spells. Uses tithing to cast spells.

Focus. http://www.uoguide.com/Focus Works in a similar fashion to meditation, but is more suitable for warrior-type characters.

Fundamental changes to systems:

Elemental resists and item properties. Probably the biggest change with AOS. Magic Resist now functions differently and armour value no longer counts vs physical damage. Instead, there are 5 'elemental resists'.

These are: Physical, Fire, Poison, Cold and Energy. The caps for these are 70, and they are dropped to 60 when the character is affected by the magery spell curse.

Physical resist obviously works vs physical damage(although it should be noted that not all physical weapons deal physical damage, some may use other elemental damage). The higher the physical resist, the lower the damage.

All magery, chivalry and necromancy spells deal damage in one of the other elements. For example, Flame Strike and Explosion deal Fire(resisted by a characters level of fire resist), Mind Blast deals Cold, Energy Bolt deals Energy.

Magic resist now functions very differently. This guide here explains it well http://www.uoguide.com/Resisting_Spells Basically, it now works vs. non direct damage spells. I initially hated this system but in hindsight I feel it is vastly superior to how it worked pre-AOS.

Many new item properties were introduced with AOS. Gone are Vanquishing, Guarding and all the others. Instead, items are created or dropped with some elemental resists as well as other item properties. A full list is here: http://www.uoguide.com/Item_Properties

These properties were all uncapped at AOS release, and the introduction of caps with Publish 25 is when the era really began to shine.
Most important for mages:
FC, FCR, SDI, LMC, MI, DCI
MOst important for warriors:
DI, SSI, LMC, HLD, HCI

Item Insurance.

Statloss removed for murderers.

Runic tools. See here: http://www.uoguide.com/Runic_Tools

Custom housing. See here: http://www.uoguide.com/House_customization

Others:

Skill changes:

Inscription http://www.uoguide.com/Inscription

Poisoning http://www.uoguide.com/Poisoning

Weapon special moves:

Unlike in UO:R, a player has to actively toggle(time) his special moves. The random factor is removed. on AOS:R we've added the additional requirement of a special only being able to be activated if a spell is not being cast or held.

http://www.uoguide.com/Special_Moves

Only those listed under 'traditional' work on AOS:R
