Part of me thinks anyone who gobs on someone like that deserves a beating. But, if you can't spit at openly racist political candidates, you can't spit at anyone.

The BNP are a legitimate political party.
Spitting at their candidate is a legal offence, no matter how much of a cunt he might be.

I agree it's an offence and it's quite probable the guy who did it is no better than the target, but I still think they are some of the most easy to justify people to spit on, except for obviously sex offenders etc.
