haha Coli I have same problem. You need a defensive midfielder in the actual DM position in front of defense I think..or at least someone with the 'arrow' back from midfield

You can also achieve similar by keeping a CM with individual instructions to not run forward much. That way you can keep a high line without dropping a CM back so much.

Yeah I'm playing a regular 4-4-2 but I've got one DM that runs back and one AM who runs forward, plus wingers on either side. I'm just having real trouble achieving any consistency. I think my problems are setting up the passing style and mentality for individual players.

The solution to get your assistant manager to stop saying that crap is the mentality of your players.

The mentality must be no more than +1 mentality between the parts of your team.
The way i've done it is you set your centre backs somewhere along the slider then

fulbacks +1 (tick on slider)
dm +2 (can be in middle dont have to be in the spot between midfield and defence)
cm +3
wingers/off mid +4
striker1 +5
striker2 +6

this is what i've done in a 442 formation.
The arrows show where you want your players when you've got the ball. And they are decided by forward runs. If never/rarely they've got backwards arrow, if often they got forward arrow.

hope you understand
