GB Football team

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympic ... 785935.stm

What is everyones thoughts on this? Obviously I'm against this but can at least see the reasoning, given every other sport at the Olympics is represented under the british flag, rather than induvidual nations.

Question is....who would manage the team?

Obviously like any other sport, the best players should be picked...even if unfortunately it would mean 11 englishman. As much as I think England are generally an overated football team, I can't think of many Scottish/Welsh/Irish players who could get a game.

@Angus, can you think of any Scot, who you'd consider an automatic starter in the 11? I was thinking Mcgregor / Gordon since England have a poor goalie, but then both have had poor seasons so far as well. I genuinely feel Boyd would be a serious threat given the chance, but then again he may be found wanting against bigger teams (debatable+we'd argue this to death I'm sure)

Would maybe have Stephen Ireland in the squad to..........but then 2 of the players I'd have, both refuse to play for their country....so where that would leave them for Team GB I don't know. :S

.....then again Olympic Football

robbie keane is about the only player who would get near the starting XI, although others may not be a million miles away, i cant see any actually better than a full strength england XI (although that is based purely on club form......)

editted to say, shay given would be in the 1st XI

Forgot about Shay Given, yeah I'd probably have him over any of the two scottish goalies.

Oh dear

I think it's how it should be. Either we're a nation or we aren't:/

I think as a one off it should be allowed at least.

Olympics are different and worth an exception.

Obvious candidate for management is Sir Alex. That would make scots happy and he would no doubt do a very good job. Player selection is a more difficult issue because there are two sides to it. One is that it's the olympics, you are there to win so only the best possible players should be selected. The other is one of fairness, England is a much bigger country, so would it be fair if all the players are English because all the best players come from there? I'm not sure it would be fair and perhaps a system of proportionality would be better.

If rugby can produce the Lions yet maintain the fiercest of all domestic rivalries, then why can't football do something similar?

Hmm.

Interesting question, I dunno, its not that its not a good idea, it just seems a bit forced to me, we only seem to care now because of where its held.

I guess if I had to pick a starting XI (and, ill say now, I believe that the SQUAD would consist of one or two Scottish players, Welsh? Maybe just Bellamy..)

Ok, so, ill try my best for a 4-4-2 formation.

GK - Given
LB - Cole
CB - Rio (Perhaps Dunne for national reasons?)
CB - Terry
RB - Hutton

LM - McGeady (J.Cole)
CM - G. Barry (I rate him..(
CM - B Ferguson
RM - A Young/Theo/Lennon

CF - Rooney
CF - Fuck knows.

Second centre forward is whatever, if Keane was scoring atm I'd say him, but he's not. So, Defoe? Owen? Aggy? K Miller? J McFadden?

I dunno.

Truthfully I dunno, i think seeing Fergie (or Thomson) in that centre midfield role would be interesting, could then replace Barry with Lampard/Gerrard and perhaps have an interesting fit.

If it happens ill support it, if it dosent it wont really bother me

Because neither are Injured? (is he sitll injured? I dunno?)

It's funny you say that, when i was about to press "Submit" I thought to myself "Carrack/Hargreaves are better holding players" but in my personal opinion Barry just has alot of fight.

I forgot about Giggs.

Perhaps we should start a poll for each position, have the top 5 players in each position and the winner of each round makes it into the I-C forums GB team?
