Read that joke in the times a few days ago. It's good he got a goal, I would have given him both of them but at least he got another to cover the first one going as an O.G.

people are so unfair on crouch, it's because he's tall everyone takes the piss, if he was a short number 10 people wouldn't.
Anyway, who else has voted for him as sports personality of the year? I have from 3 diff email addresses and according to the Times a block vote from liverpool fans has him in 2nd behind Flintoff. It will be interesting to see whether the BBC either rig the votes or if they have to explain in studio live on television why they are giving him the award..

It might also be because he's a bit pony. No matter how you might like to kid yourself he isn't Maradonna, Pele, Best or even Ian Dowie. People take the piss as he's a big striker so should thoretically win a lot in the air, but seems to fall over himself more often than actually win the ball. He has bugger all pace. His footwork and passing are better than most give him credit for, but it still isn't great - Peter Beardsley he aint.

I'm sure Crouchie is a great bloke, but lets be honest he is unlikely to make it into an all time Liverpool best 11. Or even Liverpool best 111. Thats why people take the piss - not because he's tall, but because he's distinctly average.

None of this is really agreeable, I know if he was scoring in every game people would be silent pretty soon and he isn't, but what he actually does upfront is what we've been missing for a while, he is good at holding the ball up and it lets us defend higher up the pitch and press our opponents more. Liverpool play a Spanish style of football and it is all about possesion of the ball and long sequences of passing to build pressure; most teams can't play this kind of football, as Kluivert rightly said man utd, chelsea, arsenal and liverpool are the only teams in England that can play football. Crouch is much better for us in this area, and with players like Gerrard, Garcia, Alonso, Riise, Cisse goals are being scored as a result of keeping the ball and creating a lot of chances.
We don't just knock the ball forward to the man with pace (michael owen) anymore, Owen is a fantastic player but I don't think he offered Benitez enough in his passing or playing with his back to goal for a 16m player. Benitez wouldn't have brought Cisse either I expect.

Thats kind of the point Pain, he's a striker that isn't scoring goals - what part of that has to do with his height?

Sometimes a striker can offer more to the team than goals. A winger can offer more than assists, a holding midfielder can offer more than tackles. Besides, it's simple, you don't change a winning team!
