Go read some Hemingway. "And the sun also sets" and "For whom the bell tolls" are both recommended. Except for them being good books, you'll also feel very clever for reading them and if someone asks you what book you're reading you'll sound like a real pro if you say Hemingway.
You could also try "The Game" by Niel Strauss (or something) which is about picking up women and the guys who do. Its a story rather than a "guide" so it's quite funny.
Also as Pad said, George R R Martin, it's fantasy, but it's the only fantasy I've read without feeling silly since I was 15. Some of the books have awful covers though, means you have to hide them under the bed if you have mates coming around.

Depends what you're into of course...
but the Raymond E. Feist series is good.
Start off with "Magician".
Failing that by "Orcs" or work your way through the never ending Wheel of Time series.
Or you could just buy Harry Potter and think about Hermione..thats an option aswell.

Read Angels and Demons first in my opinion, its the first book of the 2 and kinda helps with understanding the main character.
Also Deception Point and Digital Fortress ( also by Dan Brown ) are well worth a look if you do enjoy the other 2.
The entire Discworld series would keep you occupied and laughing for ages, over 25 books so far and more every year.
If you like crime thrillers anything by James Patterson and Patricia Cornwell are very good, just be mindful that both writers have several different ongoing story lines with progressive characters that you'll better understand by starting at the begining..
